The Reincarnation of Me - WORDS
Two years...I can hardly believe it! A Sabbatical? No. A Hiatus? No. Ran out of things to say...hardly. Tired of saying them? Maybe. In any case I am back, for a while or forever...I can't commit since I gave up on time. Being limited by it, defined by it, or motivated by it. I am here for the moment and if you are reading this...I am glad you are too.
I will begin this re-entry into blogdom with an observation on, what else, the 2008 Presidential race. YAWN...Ho Hum...yes, I know...it's been done to death. However, being a wordsmith and a lifelong investigator of the "meaning" behind words (often barely veiled) - the verbiage being "artfully" and strategically positioned via the media, has proven compelling fodder for the "decoder"in me.
I have recently been enlightened to the fact that we now live in a "Post Racial" society. Hmmm...I guess I missed that transition somewhere. I am indebted to the white, liberal, entitled, pundits who have been diligently promoting this theory on air. Almost to a pundit, they have used their children's "colorblindness" as proof of the "NPRS" (New Post Racial Society).
I am sure that Matthew Jr.'s baggy jeans, high end footwear, and ball capped doo ragged head, has helped to promote this theory. Perhaps, it is Tiffany's penchant for the tanning salon, desire for booty implants, weekly nail appointments, and pseudo-ebonic riddled lingo, has convinced our pundits.
Perhaps the NPRS was the keynote address at the last Parent's Night at the Ivy League Prep School where Junior attends. Somehow, I think "Post Racial" may be difficult to recognize in such a rarefied environment.
So I pose just 2 question to all the "Post Racial" pundits:
- Does Hillary Clinton's constant description of Senator Obama as "inexperienced", despite his background as a community activist and Illinois politician, sound oddly like a non-post racial description of a Black man as a "Boy". I mean, think of it like a crossword puzzle: what is another name for an "inexperienced" male? BOY.
- When Cindy McCain finds every opportunity (5 months later) to chastise Michelle Obama for her "the first time (in my adult life), I am proud to be an American" comment, then acts completely offended by it, offers this in praise of Michelle Obama; "She is a wonderful mother". Does this comment, in light of the fact that Michelle Obama is cum laude Princeton graduate, a Harvard educated lawyer, an Assistant Dean, a C-level Executive, among just a few accolades, have another connotation? Somehow, I hear a condescending "OH, she is such a good Mamie, our babies used to suckle from her kind."
Now, if you asked me there is nothing more noble than Motherhood...nothing more important but, my "post racial" ears hear something very "Willie Lynch-like" in the verbiage of the 2008 campaign.
Any marketing professional will tell you that words are anything but mere words. Words hold nuance, words hold double entendre, words hold perception, words transform thought and opinion. Words have been the primary tool of codes and brainwashing for centuries.
This 2008 Campaign...the campaign of the media power brokers...the campaign of the political pundits...the campaign of the talking heads. So many voices to hear but, listen to what is left unsaid.
